OCTOPUS RESEARCH AND CONSULTING COMPANY LTD Poll analysis of the KUSA presidential race at Kenyatta University Following the much-publicized Sunday rallies in Kenyatta University, the company was taken aback by the maturity of politics in the campus and compared it with the SONU elections in the University of Nairobi save for the massive violence in SONU elections. The rallies saw various leaders flex their financial muscles in what appeared to be a show of the mighty and the wannabes in KUSA politics. The types of vehicles in the entourage were awesome and in particular, there were two candidates who seemed to have it all planned from the onset and these were a guy whom the author can only remember as JOBU and the presidential hopeful Thuku. It is surprising that JOBU trounced even the presidential hopefuls like Adoli, Owino and Murungi with his motorcade. When our researchers visited the institution on Sunday some even thought that the presidential race was between Thuku and JOBU only to be told that JOBU was going for Finance secretary and Thuku the presidency. The Sunday revelation informed our team to conduct a research on which team would carry the day and it was no surprise that the motorcade spoke volumes. The university has seemingly decided to vote Thuku as the incoming president following his massive campaigns on Sunday. Thuku is leading other contenders with a massive 45% with his closest rival Murungi at 22%. Pinned to give reasons why Thuku was likely to win the majority of the respondents were of the view that he is a unifying factor as most of his speeches in church services and in the rallies called for unity. Some argued that his campaign team was comprised of all the tribes in the university with a majority following of the luos, kikuyus, kalenjins and coastal tribes. Infact, one of the respondents in nyayo zone stated, “Kama yeye ni mkikuyu na chief campaigner ni mtaita, security ni mjaluo, strategists wake ni waluhya and agents wako from kikuyu, meru, wacoast kwani wewe huoni unity hapo?’ The respondents further added to the violence meted against his team by the supporters of one Sammy Owino yet he controlled his people and did not retaliate in Nyayo and Ruiru as the main reasons why they would vote Thuku. Seemingly comrades in Kenyatta University love peace and unity as these two points seem to be selling Thuku. Murungi comes a distant second at 22% majorly due to his looks as many perceive him to be handsome something they share with another presidential hopeful, Adoli. However, the tides are not the same for the two as Murungi is said to have refused to pay his campaigners something that has caused division in his team with some decamping with voters. It also alleged that Murungi is a show off, has high handedness, and is not down to earth despite his eloquence in speech. Asked why they say so, a lady in a hostel by the name Aberdares stated, “Murungi alikuja hapa akatushow eti mvotie mtu ana sura na swag wachaneni na hao wengine, kwani c anafaa kuappreciate kila mtu na akuje na policies c maringo.” One of Murungi’s agents who sought anonymity told our researchers that, “huyu msee anaongea na watu vibaya juu anaona ana sura na madem watamvotia hata asipocampaign, man c huyo boy ana madharau amekataa kutulipa after job na tulielewana vipoa.” Coming a distant third at 14% is Adoli, a sixth year medical student. This is a former Mr. K.U who hopes to ride on his face value to power, however the tides have turned on him after Sunday, in a rally at Aberdares his men scuffled with Thuku men and it almost created a bad image for the two save for Thuku agents who were quick to stop the scuffle and move away from the scene. His major undoing was the sweets that he distributed on Sunday as one of his agents was quoted as saying, “Hawa mafala watkula sweety alafu ukiongezea sura, hiyo ni kura.” Ladies in Nyayo zone and Aberdares who heard of this have vowed not to vote as one of them said, “anatuona kama tunatoshana na sweety ya two bob acha atajionea Thursday.” The idea of calling ladies stupid and easily swayed by sweets has rubbed many the wrong and most of them feel he is taking advantage of them. He has been requested to apologize but by the time of writing this article there was no word from his team about calling the ladies in K.U stupid or apology. Coming fourth is Sammy Owino at 8%. This man whose slogan reads, the “paragon of revolution” on Sunday allowed his men to take the slogan literally by meting violence on almost anyone and everyone they met. The situation began in Nyayo when his supporters threw stones at Adoli’s convoy before engaging in physical fights with Thuku supporters. Most ladies in Lukenya argued that Sammy should have stopped his men but he cheered them on in his vernacular language begging the question, is this man tribal or a revolutionary? Most Luos distanced themselves from the “goons” and claimed that it was embarrassing for a luo leader to behave in such archaic manner. In Ruiru, one of the respondents accused Sammy supporters of roughing up Thuku and his men before security intervened and whisked them in one of the rooms in Athi hostels. Owino and his men did not stop at this and further had one of Thuku’s men whipped up on his face, the young comrade is currently recuperating at the health unit in the university main campus. The accusations went on with Adoli supporters arguing that Owino hired goons to prevent him from speaking in Ruiru something that respondents in Ruiru confirmed to our team. The rest of the contestants are unknown in the race as no respondent mentioned them in the research. The research was conducted on Monday between 8 am to 6 pm across main campus and ruiru campus with a total of 1500 students being interviewed by our 100 research assistants. As Octopus we pray for unity and peace in the campus and hope that violence does not precede. We wish Kenyatta University well and hope that after Thursday comrades will work as one.
