OF THE DESCENDANTS OF JOSEPH AND ANN (NANCY) BRADLEY METHENY. RECORDS These records were furnished to W. Blake Metheny, then a student in the University of Pennsylvania, by Asst Professor James Parker Metheny of the school of fine Arts of the University and by his sister Miss Grace Metheny, in the fall of the year 1933: Moses Matheny” - (1780-1841) Great Grandfather of James Parker Metheny, Moses Matheny, the fourth child of Joseph Matheny and Nancy Bradley Matheny, a cabinet maker, was born in Westmoreland Co. Virginia on Aug. 13, 1780. Was educated at home ,then learned cabinet making. When his father, Joseph Matheny, moved to Ohio from Virginia, in 1800, he settled in Wayne Township, Lawrence Co., Penna.(Among his possessions was a saw which belonged to Geo. Washingtons Bodyguard. It is now in the possession of Charles Davis, the grandson of Elijah, the eighth son of (Moses Metheny.) With this saw he made the first coffin in Lawrence Co. out of a plain log. He arrived from Virginia a poor man but by economy and diligence made himself an owner of a large tract of land. In the years 1804, he went of the State Capitol on horseback and obtained a land patent which was signed by Gov. Thomas McKean, who was in office from 1799 to 1808. The farm of Moses Matheny contained nearly 3000 acres which is now part of Elwood City, Park Gate & Rock Point. In 1837, Moses Matheny built the old tavern at Rock Point called Matheny Tavern. This was a stopping place on the old canal which ran from Rochester to Erie. According to the old register books, James A. Garfield, when a boy worked on the old canal as mule driver and stayed at nights at the Tavern. Charles Dickens, Thomas Moore and James Fenimore Cooper, also, stayed at the old tavern. The Tavern was bought from Aaron Matheny by the Penna. R .R., which was used as a station for Rock Point Picnic Grounds. In 1803 Moses Matheny married Hannah Nye, daughter of Andrew Nye. To this union were born thirteen children. The following information is contained in a chart included with the above record: Joseph Matheny married Nancy Bradley and they were the parents of the following children: John, Absalm, George, Israel Isaac, Aaron, Rachel, Mahalah, and Moses who was born Aug.13, 1780, and married Hannah Nye. Cont. Moses and Hannah Nye Matheny were the parents of the following children: Joseph, Nancy, Aaron, Rachel, Elizabeth, George, Mahalah, Elijah Gad, Amanda, Hannah, Moses, John Deemer and James Parker, B born Apr. 19, 1825, who married Nancy Bannon. James Parker and Nancy Bannon Matheny were the parents of the following children: Rachel Ledema, Lottio, Thomas Bannon, A. R .Lee, Minnie, Mariah, and Moses. Lolanti, born Jan. 9, 1856, who married Esther Jane Harris. Moses Lolanti and Esther Jane Harris Matheny were the parents of the following children: Pearle Bernetta, Grace Lettisa, and James Parker.
