*****OFFICER ASSAULT***** Today was a perfect example of why we need a new prison for the safety of our officers. As I walked down the RHU (Restricted Housing Unit) overseeing the serving of lunch trays, an inmate decided to spit through the open bars in my face. The first thing that runs through your head is anger, the next thing is does this particular inmate have any kind of communicable disease that I could take home to my spouse and children! This is the frustration that we as officers face on a daily basis. While there are many people, political and non political, fighting FOR our safety, well-being, and understanding our frustrations, we have those people, political and non political, that do not care and are putting a price on our, the officers, health and safety. In a new prison the bars are replaced with solid doors with an officers safety in mind. These are the types of assaults that could possibly assault for years to come not only the officer but also the familys fear of them coming home with something they cannot get rid of. My question to you is how do you put a price on MY health and safety and also the safety of my family should I take something home to them!!! Make no mistake we know what our daily risks could be but we also know that there are people in positions of power that can give us the support and respect to authorize the building of a new prison having our health and safety in mind. Keep in mind most of the people behind the bars are violent and should not be out on the streets for everyone in the communitys safety. The truth is when a person gets put in jail the common thought is they are just put there and not thought of again,but the fact is someone has to make sure they stay there. Those people are called CORRECTIONS OFFICERS!!
