OK---Theres something wrong when someone who has been an educator for 42 years cant do 2nd and third grade Math homework because the instructions make no sense and the process makes even less sense. WTH??? You know--ever since Ive been teaching they keep coming up with these new and different methods and terms---after a few years they decide theres a better way---so everything is switched up again . . .and every time they institute the change a whole population of kids who were having trouble grasping the last better way are left floundering and even more confused. No wonder teachers have to teach for the tests---THE KIDS ARENT GETTING IT!!! Only people benefiting from this fiasco are the people making up this stuff (do they even like kids??) and the publishing companies that get to sell new books. Some people say they need to know the why and how about the answer. Really?? Do They?? Ever heard of hands on learning and visual aids??? At 6, 7, 8 isnt it more important to just KNOW that 4+4=8?? Leave the using half a page of paper to show the work until after they have learned the basics!! And for petes sake stop punishing the kids with a memory because they know the correct answer and dont need to write down all that gibberish!!! Do you know what your checkbooks would look like if we had to do the math like the kids do . . . .
