OK. I have given it a bit of thought, and I am putting it out there. I dont think it is that big of a deal that Marvel is making Thor a woman and turning Sam Wilson into Captain America. As a matter of fact, the more they push this, the more devious I find that who thing. Why? Two reasons - 1) It is the illusion of bringing under-represented groups into mainstream comics, but actually just using them as a way to sell more comics by such daring choices. We ALL know, that these are not going to last, just as we knew that Doc Ock was not going to stay Spider-man and Brother Voodoo was not going to stay Sorcerer Supreme. Clearly these changing character games are not new, but there are some who are getting upset over this, and others who are thinking it is great moment in diversity, when it isnt going matter. Just like most other times, we are going to return to the status quo in about a year or two, and no one will ever mention this ever happened. and 2) It is saying that the only way people will want to read under-represented groups starring in a mainstream comic is to put them in White Male drag. No one would care about them if they didnt have the White Male aura of the costume. This is especially offensive in the Captain America case. The Falcon has been around for over 40 years. He is a stand-out character in the second Captain America movie. yet Marvel has no faith that anyone would want to read his comic...not unless he borrows the outfit of an old white guy. Over at the Distinguished(?) Competition, they have Batwoman, for all intents and purposes, a new character who is not just female but also lesbian, and heading up her own comic. And they also have Batwing, a Black character who fights crime and flies (sound like a certain Mr. Wilson we all know?) who also has his own comic book. Marvel has taken steps to represent under-represented groups - Ms. Marvel, Captain Marvel, the up-coming Storm and Black Panther (oh wait, that was cancelled). But this whole Thor/Captain America thing just rubs me a bit the wrong way. What does anyone else think? But claiming that this marketing ploy is Marvel making strides over DC is really not being honest about what is out there.
