OK People, There are two actors on stage. One man and one woman playing the roles of two very betrothed lovers. The setting is sublime, the wardrobes are immaculate and the score is seductive. They interact in every possible representation of emotion but ultimately are committed to one another in complete submission to LOVE. They are selfless in their acts with only one another’s happiness in mind. The final act ends with their getting married and their individual lives ending but beginning a life as one. The lights dim. The curtains close. The music ends………….. Resounding applause for the wonderful performance follows. Awesome……. Backstage, they remove their wardrobe, makeup and props. They immediately begin to proclaim their dissatisfaction with one another’s performance. They criticize the mistakes that each of the two made during the act. They remind those who work with them of their disdain for one another and are constantly plotting on finding a way to replace their counterpart. Masterfully acted out and disappointingly lived out is the truth about their professional relationship. There are so many of us who do this very thing in real life. We are putting on “shows” of commitment and contentment. We act out the wonderful relationship that so many aspire to have but behind closed doors we are at each other’s throats, criticizing and plotting with malice and contempt. We are not playing our intended roles but instead playing A ROLE. In this day and age, I am inclined to believe that “Life has definitely and sadly begun to IMITATE art”. (Emphasis on the IMITATE) Oscar Wilde knew what he was talking about…..
