OK so Ive had time to reflect on this. Rime of the Ancient Mariner in this this years NZ Festival was certainly the most self indulgent, protracted exercise in meticulous lethargy Ive ever seen grace the stage. The shows astounding technical elements completely upstaged any performance. This left the audience segmented from an sense of narrative or connection to the performers. I was genuinely shocked at the end when the audience gave a thunderous display of adulation, i now realise this was on a account of pretty lights and set. In essence, the stage was sparkly, people like sparkly things. People were applauding sparkles.
