OK time to get controversial. Theres another program on the TV. about energy prices. Now dont get me wrong the way the prices are increasing far in excess of inflation is very worrying. However, what do we expect the British Gas Corporation and CEGB were both privatized. These organizations moved from essentially government organizations to commercial companies. The Salient difference is that a commercial company must strive for profit... not just provide a service. It is responsible to its share holders to make as much money as possible to provide a sound investment and return for the shareholders. So why do people think that they now have the right to complain about price rises and CEO/Chairmans salaries...the companies are not charities they can pay be people what they want, they can charge what they want. What we have here is the result of short term thinking in Government Policy. I bet the shares people bought at the time dont seem so attractive now.
