OK. way back in the late 1980s, when the education debates were getting under way yet again, E.D. Hirsch, at the University of Virginia, published a book that made quite a splash at the time: CULTURAL Literacy. He worried about how illiterate American students were: how little they knew --so his book provides a list. Here are some of the phrases we are supposed to know, or be able to identify: [chosen at random] golden calf, golden fleece, Golden Rule...the Gold Standard...a good man is hard to find....solar cell, the solar system, the solid South., solipsism, Solomon, Something is rotten in the state of Denmark...feedback loop, feet of clay, fellow traveler, felony,...Fermi, Enrico...De Mille, Cecil B....DNA...dark horse, Darrow, Clarence...date which will live in infamy...Time and tide wait for no man, time dilation, time exposure, Time heals all wounds, Time is money. times winged chariot, time to be born and a time to die, Tin Pan Alley.... [So, how did you do?]
