OKAVANGO SCHOOLS BENEFIT FROM BALLS DONATION H.E. the President Lt. General Sir Seretse Khama Ian Khama has handed over 1,060 balls to all schools in the Okavango Sub-district. The balls were part of the 20,000 that the World Group of Companies had pledged for the entire country at a total cost of P4.2 million. The donation covered three sporting codes of football, volleyball and netball. In addition, the donor also promised to buy school uniform to all the pupils at Kathiana Mahunga Primary School next year. Speaking during the handing over ceremony in Shakawe, the acting Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture, the Honourable Vincent Seretse, praised the donor for a good gesture adding that the donation answered the President’s call to support sports. Seretse said the objective of the donation was to develop and nurture sports at grass root level in the district which he said has potential and talent. He said grass root sport development was crucial because it created opportunities for the students to perform at professional and higher sports competitions. “We know individuals like Nigel Amos who were given the opportunity at a tender stage and ended up becoming professional athletes and in the process making fortunes”, he added. He advised teachers to ensure the pupils balanced sports and their academic work so that they excel in both. Shakawe Senior Secondary School head, Petrus Mosomane thanked the President and his entourage for the donation and hoped that the recipients would produce the expected results of developing sports. He also informed the gathering that they had introduced an initiative dubbed “Child friendly school” which put more emphasis on a conducive learning environment. (BOPA)
