OKPOLUPM ETTEH: THE UNANNOUNCED ANOINTED By Aniekan Sunday “I have provided among his sons a king for myself; … as they came in and he caught sight of Eliab he at once said: surely his anointed one is before the Lord. But God said to Samuel, do not look at his stature, for I have rejected him. For not the way man sees is the way God sees. Because mere man sees what appears to the eyes, but for God, he sees what the heart is. Then Jesse called Abinadab and made him pass before Samuel. And he said “Neither has the Lord chosen this one. So Jesse made seven of his sons pass before Samuel; still Samuel said to Jesse “Are these all your young men here? Then he said; “There remain the youngest, and there he is keeping the sheep. And Samuel said to Jesse; “send and bring him, for we will not sit down till he comes here! So he sent and brought him in and the Lord said “Arise, anoint him for this is the one. Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the midst of his brothers, and the spirit of the Lord came upon David from that day forward.” (1 Samuel 16: 1-13) The story of how David’s anointing and subsequent enthronement as king, one that succeeded Saul, is one that shows the limit of men and the limitless of God. It tells us that God sees even beyond the minute content of our hearts. For me, it gives a graphical process of how the Leader of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Okpolupm Etteh, will succeed Governor Godswill Akpabio as Governor in 2015. It depicts God’s infinite grace in action. Rt. Hon. Etteh is a leader sought out by God to lead the people of Akwa Ibom State from 2015 and since it is the will of God, it will prevail. When Samuel saw the first son of Jesse who was Eliab, according to the story, he said “surely his anointed one is before the Lord”, but God who sees things beyond human eyes told Samuel not to look at physical status or the beauty of Eliab because not the way man sees is the way God sees. God saw beyond the physical appearance of Rt. Hon. Etteh before choosing him to lead his people. Etteh is one of Governor Akpabio’s men whose footprints have traversed the length and breadth of the state leaving unbeatable legacies. He is a man who has contributed immensely to humanity through his good deeds. Etteh’s anointing symbolizes the way God often disregard human customs and tranditions just to accomplish His purpose. Being the longest serving member of the House of Assembly, he belongs to the famous Etteh family of Upenekang and has the first Nigerian Professor of Physics, Professor Akpanoluo Etteh, as his eldest brother and the managing partner of the popular Civil Engineering Consultancy firm, Etteh Aro and Partners, who is alleged to be ex-husband of the embattled House of Representatives Speaker, Mrs. Patricia Etteh, Engr. Etteh I. Etteh, as an elder brother. His antecedence in legislative matters is believed to have been laid down by yet another of his elder brother, Elder Nseabasi Etteh, who was a member of the pioneer Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly and also a former Chairman of Ibeno Local Government Council. As a leader who put his faith and trust God, he has offer himself to serve the people of the state and Nigeria at large. His appearance in the 2015 Governorship arena is not an accident but a divine arrangement of God. Having seen his capacity and ability to render needed services to the people of the state, Rt. Hon. Etteh has totally surrendered himself to continuing the good works of Chief Akpabio in 2015, even to a greater height. As a servant leader, he lived a life that has been of immense benefit to many. He is an icon of hope to many, a cheerful and generous giver. His act of kindness has made him to become a father to the fatherless; a friend to the poor. Truly, this leader of leaders, as fondly called, is a square peg in a square hold. As it is often said that reward for hard work and excellence performance is always more work and more work, as 2015 beckons, the people of Akwa Ibom State, through Rt. Hon. Etteh, will make history yet again.
