"According to the final Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) submitted by the Fish and Wildlife Service, a combination of lethal and non-lethal techniques will be used to “remove” the barred owl from four specific locations in California, Oregon and Washington. The service also says they’ll consider the continuation of these removal procedures should they prove effective in pushing the barred owl out of the Pacific Northwest. The service expects to continue removing the barred owls for a minimum of four years before they begin to see any significant results. “We can’t ignore the mounting evidence that competition from barred owls is a major factor in the northern spotted owl’s decline, along with habitat loss,” said Service Director Dan Ashe in a press statement."
