ON CONFIDENCE IN GOD! When a man trusts in his own talents and powers it is a great misfortune. For such a one who trusts in his own knowledge prudence or mind - God in order to make him learn his own insufficiency withdraws from him His help and leaves him to his own resources from whence it comes that notwithstanding all his labours they produce little or no fruit. From this we learn why it is that we so often fail in our undertakings. - St. Vincent de Paul. St. Francis of Sales prospered in all that he undertook for God: and the reason of this was because he never trusted in his own abilities but only Divine Providence; and he never felt so sure of success as when he had no other ground for hope but this the goodness and power of God. St. Philip Neri used to say When a person of his own accord puts himself in the way on temptations or occasions of sin and says I shall not fall or I shall not sin; there is perhaps no surer sign that such an one will fall with the greatest possible risk for everlasting salvation. But when temptations come upon us without our seeking them we should not fear them but sweetly trusting in our Lord lift up our hearts to him and go cheerfully on in the way of the Lord.
