ON NEWSSTANDS NOW! ASIAN Geographic No.103 Issue 2/2014 REFLECTIONS OF ASIA ========= Indonesia & Greece: Echoes of Explosion Planets, Plagues and Pumice In geological terms, the eruption of Santorini ranked seven on the Volcanic Explosivity Index, one of the Earth’s most devastating, with far-reaching consequences, possibly including a volcanic winter and climate changes. Though cataclysmic, there are neither records nor any documentation of the event. Its volcanic plume likely rose 150 kilometres into the stratosphere and the resulting tsunami generated waves as much as 150 metres high, destroying the northern coast of Crete. Besides the attendant changes in climate, pumice and ash also rained on Turkey and the rest of the Mediterranean. Yet interestingly, Thera had always been subject to these rages, occurring in similar fashion every couple of hundred thousand years or so.
