ON OSUN GOVERNORSHIP ELECTION By Adnan Mukhtar Adam Tudunwada As the people of the state of Osun set to decide on August 9 on who will take the mantle of leadership of the state, Osun state is home to several of Nigerias most famous landmarks, including the campus of the Obafemi Awolowo university, Nigerias pre-eminent institution of higher learning located at Ile-Ife an important early centre of political and religious development for yoruba culture. The major sub-ethnic groups in Ọṣun State are Ife, Ijesha, Oyo, Ibolo and Igbomina of the Yoruba people, although there are also people from other parts of Nigeria. Yoruba and English are the official languages. People of Osun State practice Islam, Christianity and paganism called traditional faith. Osun State, created from the old Oyo State in August 1991, has a large population of both Muslims and Christians. Among the famous religious leaders from Osun State is the London-based Muslim cleric Sheikh Dr. Abu-Abdullah Adelabu, who hailed from the states capital city, Osogbo and Pastor (Dr.) Johnson Ade Odewale of Christ Apostolic church, Calvary Assembly from Odeomu, who is based in Boston, USA. The Osun State government claims to offer services to both Muslims and Christians in the state, especially through Pilgrims Welfare Boards. Osun is the home of many Christian religious leaders in the country today, most of whom are from Ijeshaland, including Pastor Adeboye who is the general overseer of The Redeemed Christian Church of God, also Pastor William Folorunso Kumuyi, the founder and General Superintendent of the Deeper Life Bible Church is from Erin-Ijesha, Osun State and many other Christian Leaders. Osun State is divided into three federal senatorial districts, each of which is composed of two administrative zones. The state consists of thirty Local Government Areas, the primary (third tier) unit of government in Nigeria. Osun state barely has a flag On the forthcoming election in the land of virtue, they are three major contenders, the incumbent governor Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola(APC) who is seen as the man that transformed Osun state to where it is today, he worked tremendously for the state of Osun therefore he deserve a second term so that he can continue with his transformation of taking the land of virtue to an ultimate triumph, the other contender and candidate of the PDP Sen Iyiola Omisore a prince as he belongs to a royal family is a former impeached Deputy Governor of the state, the people of Osun have been accusing him of having hand in the murder of former Attorney General of the Federation Chief James Ajibola Idowu Ige(Bola Ige) SAN a patriotic Osun citizen who has worked tremendously for the creation and emancipation of Osun state, this accusation on Omisore by the people of Osun will make him to lose the election to Ogbeni, Alhaji Fatai Akinbade a popular politician was the secretary to Osun State government during the tenure of Governor Olagunsoye Oyinlola is making waves in the race Other contenders out of the 20 candidates, six are major players in the politics of the state. These include Alhaji Fatai Akinbade of Labour Party(LP), Elder Segun Akinwusi of Social Democratic Party(SDP) Mr Niyi Owolade of Accord Party(AP) and Senator Sunday Fajimi of Alliance for Democracy(AD) The people of Osun needs someone courageous, confident, focused and experienced, someone that will transform the state economically, politically and socially infact to an ultimate triumph, I advised the people of Osun to vote for the person that posessed the aforementioned qualities, I hope the INEC will conduct a peaceful, free annd fair election an election that will deserve world attention as the best, the issue of harassement and intimidation by the Nigerian securities should not be entertained, it should be avoided infact all form of election malpractices I hope the election will be peacefull and credible, wishing the people of Osun all the best in the forthcoming election.
