ON THE POTTERS WHEEL (Jeremiah 18:1-6) Amplified Bible (AMP) The word which came to Jeremiah from the Lord: 2 Arise and go down to the potter’s house, and there I will cause you to hear My words. 3 Then I went down to the potter’s house, and behold, he was working at the wheel. 4 And the vessel that he was making from clay was spoiled in the hand of the potter; so he made it over, reworking it into another vessel as it seemed good to the potter to make it. 5 Then the word of the Lord came to me: 6 O house of Israel, can I not do with you as this potter does? says the Lord. Behold, as the clay is in the potter’s hand, so are you in My hand, O house of Israel. God wanted to speak His word unto Jeremiah and He did that by taking him through unusual practical spiritual experience at the potters house. he went there, and as he observed the potter work on the wheel, the word of God came to him. God wants to bring us to similar spiritual experience as we will observe the potter once again as he works on his wheel. i pray God will open our understanding to comprehend the word that God speaks to us this moment. I will like to dwell in verse three and six. in verse three, he came into the potters house and saw him working with the clay on his wheel. verse six we see God saying, cant I do as the potter does to the clay? He stood in the position of the potter, while we are nothing but clay in His hands. The potter wrought his work on His wheel. a potters wheel is a machine used in the shaping of round ceramic ware. The wheel may also be used during the process of trimming the excess body from dried ware and for applying incised decoration or rings of colour. it is on the wheel the potter achieves his desire upon each clay he works with. For any clay on the potters wheel, it will experience a continuous merry-go-round movement. it is always a journey in circles, it will end up where it begins. to the clay it seems that all is not working the right way as it should, for it had passed through the same point several times over and over. the clay will feel defeated or embarrased all because the wheel on which it was to be made was just whirling in the same direction, which it had no choice than to journey along the flow of the wheel. but the more the wheel spins the more something is made out of the ordinary useless clay. the clay would have concluded that there is no improvement been done upon its life, but the potters desire of making a vessel from it is being achieved. as the potter spins his wheel, the clay is shaped, trimmed to form something useful. the uselessness of the clay is undergoing a transformation of becoming something of value and worth. then, after countless whirling experience, it will now come out as a household use. the same old, defeated, abandone, embarrased, trampled and rejected clay will be adorned and be pampered as a special object of purpose. it wont be dumped just anywhere, but in a special place for a special occassion. that clay now becomes an object of holding water to quench the thirst of others. it is now transformed to a thing where treasures are kept. it goes on to meet the need of others. people will want to have it for themselves, on like when it was just a lump of clay. they will be at rest when they know that whatever is put in the earthen pitcher will not leak out. God wants to make something for Himself out of your life, but when will you give your life to Him, as the clay does to the potter? for how long shall you continue to struggle your life with Him, while He waits for your surrender? none of your effort to become something yourself can be fruitful except by giving your all to Him. ...shall the clay say to him who forms it, what are you making? He wants you to release yourself to Him. The process of making is not always easy for the clay, it involves cutting, bruising, turning, beating, trimming and shaping with sharp objects. it is like all things are going imbalanced and nothing good is even coming out of it. what an odd life for the clay? but now the potter is happy and satisfied for he had achieved what he intended. its life had turned out to be a treasure to be treasured. whatever you are passing through is to bring praise, satisfaction and glory unto God. Is this the picture of your life experience? God wants to speak to you. so many times we have found ourselves in situation like this. is it that you always end up where you start anything? is failures, defeats, reproaches, embarazement, rejections, hatred and demotion is all you face in any direction you turn to? Nothing good is coming out of your life no matter the strategies and plans you apply, even when it works for others? are you always defeated by slight things? defeat in business? failure in marriage? setback in career? unfruitfulness in your labours? is it always like all the world is turning against you? these are the wheel experiences anybody in the making on Gods wheel will always experience. Fear not! it is God at work upon your life. He is bringing you through a great change of your life. every moment is not goody-goody. things dont always go smooth for such men, while God is at work. their journeys in life will always be in circles, until God is done with them. why are these ordeals? all these experiences comes because as the potters wheel spins so we move in the cause. such lives are not determined by themeselves, but by the potter who makes things out of their lives. sometimes the wheel stops, probably for the potter to make some adjustment in his design. but to the clay it will be a sigh of relief and thought that all is over. as soon as it is coming out of its dizziness, immediately the potter is back at work. what a painful experience is this always be? when you think all these spinning and merry-go-rounding is over and you are giving a sigh of relief, thanking God for seeing you through in your difficult situations, then immediately you are back at it again. Another thing is that the quantity and the size of the vessel determines the time it will be spinned on the wheel. the level of your usefulness will determine the lenght of your dealing in Gods hands. you cant compare the time it will take a potter to make a mug to the time it will take him to make a pitcher of about twenty gallons in volume. so, the depth of your trials and affliction is the height of your triumph and glory. The children of Israel in the wilderness experience a journey in circles. they had to journey for forty years in the same spot. they could recorded countless number of days without food, water, cloths, all as a result of what the chief potter of their lives is making out of them. to them, their lives seems hopeless, marred and broken, but something desirable is being wrought out of their lives. in the book of Deuteronomy chapter eight verse three and four. the children of Israel were humbled by God, striken by hunger and thirst, for them to know they were not live by their efforts in making provision of bread for themselves, but by the provisions the word of God gives to them. their healing comes as the word of God for healing is being spoken to them, they were not to seek men to get healed, but wait on the word of God. they had to follow the leading of the LORD for their lives for forty years. none of them were to use his/her wisdom or intellects, lest he will be cut off from his people. At the end of their circles on the potters wheel, the children of Israel went ahead to eat where they never laboured, they lived in houses they never built. JOSHUA.24:11-13 11 You went over the Jordan and came to Jericho; and the men of Jericho fought against you, as did the Amorites, Perizzites, Canaanites, Hittites, Girgashites, Hivites, and Jebusites, and I gave them into your hands. 12 I sent the [a ]hornet [that is, the terror of you] before you, which drove the two kings of the Amorites out before you; but it was not by your sword or by your bow. 13 I have given you a land for which you did not labor and cities you did not build, and you dwell in them; you eat from vineyards and olive yards you did not plant. The aftermath of forty years of circles resulted into conquest, victory, peace and comfort for the children of Israel. likewise, whatever you are going through right now, they are not there to kill or ruin you, but that the Glory of God be revealed in your life. The trials and afflictions that God brings us through are not to deform us ,but to transform us to the best. your labours will become favour unto you. your defeat will become a lifting to higher ground. your life will turn out to be a celebration, in Jesus Name. beloved, dont give up on yourself, TRUST IN LORD; THE MAKER OF YOUR LIFE AND THE BEST WILL SOON MANIFEST OUT OF YOUR LIFE. -SHALOM!
