OPEN LETTER TO NETANYAHU Dear Mr Netanyahu The problem with the Israel/Palestinian issue is that Israel wants a State but the Palestinians dont really want a State (or if they do, thats secondary) they want the land. And I understand the arguments from both sides points of view as, I Im sure do you. The reason its impossible to resolve is that, short of giving up Israel, there really is nothing Israel can currently do to appease the Palestinians. So Mr Netanyahu, the Palestinians need to be persuaded (and not with violence) that having a State alongside Israel with freedom of movement and trade is a far better option for them than Israels removal. And to weaken Hamas Israel needs to persuade ordinary Palestinians that life alongside Israel will be not just OK but great. And to do that it has to show restraint. Hamas are not going to disappear overnight even if the blockade is partially removed. Peoples hearts and minds are changed slowly but they are not changed with violence. The Palestinians arent going to get rid of Israel with violence and the Israelis arent going to defeat Hamas with it either. Israel needs to persuade the Palestinians that it understands their grievances, that it understands why they believe Israels very existence is illegitimate but also why Israel (given that it does now exist) has a right to continue to exist and that it would genuinely like to do so alongside a prosperous Palestine. This will take time. There will continue to be acts of terrorism in the meantime but Israel needs to show restraint as Israel holds all the power. The status quo is that there is a free and independent democratic Israel. Thats not the case for the Palestinians. Mr Netanyahu you are the one who has the power to bring about change and save your country. I truly believe that what youre doing now will destroy it and that, for me, is both tragic and terrifying.
