#OPINION BARINGO COUNTY TAKES HOME THE TROPHY Koskei Tumm Baringo County officials are demanding the highest bribes, a new survey by the ethics and Anti-corruption Commission (EACC) has revealed. Dont celebrate yet! According to the survey, Baringo County officials are demanding an average of Ksh.20,075, the highest in Kenya. Kirinyaga follows at a safe distance with Ksh.15,914. This has came barely two weeks after Baringo Governor Benjamin Cheboi was alleged to have relocated to Kabarnet Hotel at the cost of ksh10 million taxpayers money, a claim he has since denied. I dont know if we surely deserve such an honour. But I believe the claims are not far fetched. Look at our state of roads, hospitals, schools, traffic police and other public utilities. It does not need a rocket scientist to explain further. Theodore Roosevelt said A man who has never gone to school may steal a freight car; but if he has a university education, he may steal the whole railroad. We are probably more educated than in the past 10 years. Carl Sagan adds that One of the saddest lessons of history is this; if we have been bamboozled long enough, we tend to reject any evidence of the bamboozle. Were no longer interested in finding out the truth. The bamboozle has captured us. It is simply too painful to acknowledge, even to ourselves, that weve been taken. Once you give a charlatan power over you, you almost never get it Now that we are the national champions, should we strive to conquer the world. It is not a wild dream. Kenya is ranked 139 out of 176 of the world most corrupt countries. They tie with Azerbaijan, Nepal, Nigeria and Pakistan. It is estimated that, an average Kenyan pays 16 bribes per month. Since we are the best in Kenya, who knows, we may soon take home the hotly contested World Trophy!
