OPINION BInay isnt afraid but.... Vice President Jejomar Binay has been publicly saying that he is not afraid to face is accusers and prove to the world that the accusation of illegally amassing wealth being hurled against him has no basis. Yes, he is not afraid to confront his detractors nor is he afraid to address the allegations. But Binay has dodged the chances of being heard and the opportunity to defend himself when he skipped the hearing set by the Senate Blue Ribbon Committee and called off the debate organized by the Kapisanan ng mga Broadkaster sa Pilipinas. His decision to snub the Senate inquiry had cast doubts on his claims that he has been treated unfairly by the subcommittee composed of Senators Aquilino Koko Pimentel III, Alan Peter Cayetano and Antonio Trillanes IV, all of whom he accused of political assassination. His decision was viewed by many as a cowardly act, with his critics calling it as an admission of guilt. But, all was not lost for VP Binay after the Senate snub, as the public started to look forward to the debate between him and Trillanes on November 27. Despite his no show in the hearing, the public has given the Vice President the benefit of the doubt. Maybe he has valid reasons for not attending the probe, or maybe it was not the right forum, were among the opinions aired by supporters and critics alike. ***** Naturally, everybody would feel betrayed and dismayed following the announcement made by VP Binay yesterday, that he will not debate with Trillanes, claiming that he doesnt want what the senator has been saying about the aborted face off. He blamed Trillanes for the cancellation of the much awaited event, stressing that the lawmaker has been complaining that he would be at the disadvantaged side considering the background and expertise of the Vice President in debates being a lawyer. But the people will not bite Binays line of reasoning that appears to be an illogical cover up rather than a valid excuse. He was the one who challenged Trillanes to a debate, even saying that hes willing to face the senator anytime, anywhere but not in the Senate. Definitely, his decision to duck the debate would put him in a bad light. But whos to blame? No one but himself. Binay has shown inconsistency in his position, a quality that is very unpresidential. With the unexpected cancellation of the debate, public frustration may cause Binay his political career. Worse, it may also affect the political future of his son, Makati Mayor Junjun, and two daughters, Senator Nancy and Makati Congresswoman Abigail. ***** Why Binay, who has kept on insisting that his conscience is clear, threw away the golden opportunity to prove Trillanes wrong? What pushed him to call the debate off? If the accusations are mere lies fabricated by his political nemesis, why doesnt he confront the charges and address the problem? Whatever and whichever way you look at it, the cancellation of the debate would not do Binay any good. His decision will only invite more suspicion. It would not only taint his credibility but would also destroy whatever is left in his reputation as an incorruptible government leader.
