ORCA ALERT UPDATE! Here are some photos by Slater Thomas Moore, taken this morning of 5 of the very rarely seen Eastern Tropical Pacific (ETPs) killer whales that were sighted by Capt. Larry Hartmann on the Ocean Explorer out of Daveys Locker. When last seen (~2:30pm), these orcas were about 13 miles se of Dana Point, headed se at 6-8 knots. 8-12 of these ETP orcas were sighted during the LA week of November, headed up the coast. These whales are not separated into distinct ecotypes: they are NOT Biggs transients, offshores, or residents. EPTs are likely opportunistic, and have been known to feed on marne mammals, fish, and rays. They may very well be heading back to Mexico. Oceanside and San Diego: high alert tomorrow!
