ORIENTATION FOR 2014/2015 FRESH STUDENTS ENDS WITH A CALL ON THEM TO BE SERIOUS WITH THEIR STUDIES Students have been admonished to be serious with their studies and portray the university in a good light so as to attain the benefits accruing from such outstanding behaviours. The Vice-Chancellor of Ignatius Ajuru University of Education, Professor Rosemund Dienye Green-Osahogulu gave the admonition at the opening ceremony of a one week orientation programme for fresh students of the 2014/2015 academic session on Monday December 8, 2014 at the university auditorium. The Vice-Chancellor who reminded them of the efforts and commitment of their parents towards their wellbeing encouraged them to reciprocate the gesture by making them proud with good results. The Chief Executive who said that she was proud to belong to the teaching profession told them that they could rise to whatever level they wanted to if they worked hard.She said that they were role models who would train primary and secondary school pupils who would lead the country in future and urged them to focus on their academic achievement and be the finest teachers Nigerians can be proud of. Prof. Rosemund Osahogulu also informed them that a student who represented the university well and won two awards in academic excellence was given scholarship and advised them to be of good behaviour and work hard so that they could also be granted scholarship by the institution. The university she stated though barely five years old had carved a niche for itself and advised them to desist from acts that would bring down the name of the university or have them expelled. Speaking on the ‘’Academic Programmes and the distribution of Academic Departments at the three Campuses of the university’’ the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Professor joseph Kinanee took them through the various departments and faculties and told them to adhere strictly to institutions given and as laid down for them. In a short presentation on the ‘’University Regulations and the Requirements for Graduation’ the Registrar, Barrister IkemAdiele emphasized that they were likely to graduate with honours if they obeyed the rules and regulations of the university but regretted that people in the third world countries found it very difficult to keep to rules. He observed that anarchy would be the order of the day if rules and regulations were not strictly adhered to and stated that having found themselves in a specialized institution, they owed their parents the duty to graduate within stipulated time. The Registrar who stressed that ignorance of the law was not an excuse asked those with fake certificate to withdraw now to avoid the embarrassment of being asked to withdraw in their final year and handed over to the police as there were various levels of checks by the university that they could not beat.He encouraged them to attend classes always and on time too, conduct themselves in an acceptable manner and pass all their compulsory courses. He advised those with financial or health challenges to suspend their studentship pending when things improved for them. He also maintained that those wishing to change courses would be allowed by the university to do so by applying for a change in the course of study of their choice. The Bursar, Mr. Davis Ojima (JP) while speaking on ‘School Fees Payment and Studentship’ took them through the mode of payment and advised them to pay their fees as that was what guaranteed their being students of the institution. In her presentation on the ‘’ Use of the university library’, ’ Dr.Boma Obi remarked that they were bonafide students of the university only after paying their school fees and also had the right to use the university academic library for literary skills, information and for research. The university librarian urged them to use the e-library and other facilities provided as much as possible to increase their information base and to ask questions when in doubt from the system librarian. Other speakers at the event were the Director of Health services Dr.Ibidaba Alabere who spoke on ‘’Health Issues and the University Government and assured them that all their health needs would be provided by the university with twenty four hours services, the Chief Security Officer, Mr Nwibar iNwidua who asked them to be security conscious while speaking to them on ‘’Security Issues on Campus and services of the security unit. The Dean, Students Affairs Dr Veronica Okogbaa in a ‘’Brief Summary on the life of a student on campus’’ noted that the university was a professional environment and enjoined them to take all programmes seriously so that they do not stumble and fumble. She said they would be taken round the different units ofthe University for them to familiarise themselves. The president of the Student Union Government, Mr Michael Wonodi also talked on ‘’Student Unionism and membership of student clubs, Associations and societies on campus. The event ended with a vote of thanks by Dr. Regina Azuwena.
