OUCH!!!! & Allodynia What if everything you picked up was painful? What if your legs tingled in pain when they made contact with the fabric of your clothing? What if a cotton ball caressing your arm feels like boiling water hitting your skin? Is it Allodynia? Allodynia is an unusual and not widely understood condition that signals neural pain receptors to sense “pain due to a stimulus which does not normally provoke pain. Temperature or physical stimuli can provoke Allodynia, which may feel like a burning sensation and it often occurs after injury to a site. There are five different kinds or types of Allodynia pain: • Mechanical allodynia (also known as tactile allodynia) • Static mechanical allodynia – pain in response to light touch/pressure • Dynamic mechanical allodynia – pain in response to stroking light • Thermal (hot or cold) allodynia – pain from normally mild skin temperatures in the affected area • Movement allodynia - pain triggered by normal movement of joints or muscles Allodynia is a clinical feature of many painful conditions, such as neuropathys complex regional pain syndrome, postherpetic neuralgia, fibromyalgia, and migraine
