OUR DAILY VITAMIN FOR THE SOUL... Martha and Mary - Lk 10:38-42 38As [Jesus and his disciples] continued their journey [Jesus] entered a village where a woman whose name was Martha welcomed him. 39She had a sister named Mary [who] sat beside the Lord at his feet listening to him speak. 40Martha, burdened with much serving, came to him and said, “Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me by myself to do the serving? Tell her to help me.” 41The Lord said to her in reply, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and worried about many things. 42There is need of only one thing. Mary has chosen the better part and it will not be taken from her.” Reflection & Challenge: THE BETTER PART. Jesus appreciates what Martha and the other women are doing for him and his disciples, but he is particularly honored by Mary who, as a disciple, sits at his feet and listens to his words. Action is certainly important, but contemplation—prayer and intimacy with Jesus—is necessary to determine that the action is in accordance with God’s will. Today is the feast of Our Lady of the Rosary. Praying the rosary, we contemplate the different events or mysteries—joyful, luminous, sorrowful, and glorious—in the life of Jesus and Mary. Though regarded a Marian devotion, the rosary is a Christocentric prayer contemplating the mysteries of Jesus. Pope Paul VI, quoting Pope Pius XII, called the rosary “a compendium of the entire Gospel.” When Mary appeared at Fatima to Lucia, Jacinta, and Francisco, she told them to pray the rosary daily for the conversion of sinners and for peace in the world. The rosary is also a great means of preserving love and unity in the family. As the slogan adopted by Fr. Patrick Peyton and the Family Rosary Crusade puts it, “The family that prays together stays together!” Bear in mind that while people are concerned with appearance, the Lord looks at the heart. We pray: Lord Jesus, to be in your presence is life and joy for me. Free me from needless concerns and preoccupations that I may give you my undivided love and attention. AMEN.
