Obama Presents Defiant Vision for Final Two Years in Office =============================================== President Barack Obama delivered a defiant vision for his final two years in office during his State of the Union address Tuesday, laying out a range of proposals to improve the fortune’s of America’s middle class. With the American economy growing and generating jobs at a steady clip, the address was also a victory lap for a president often accused of stymieing economic growth. “We have risen from recession freer to write our own future than any other nation on Earth,” Obama said. “Will we accept an economy where only a few of us do spectacularly well? Or will we commit ourselves to an economy that generates rising incomes and chances for everyone who makes the effort?” His ambitious domestic agenda included ideas on making community college free, child care affordable, and new taxes on the wealthy and financial institutions. On foreign policy, Obama defended what he described as “military power with strong diplomacy” in calling on Congress to pass an authorization to use military force against the Islamic State. Obama also called on Congress to repeal the Cuban embargo and reiterated his threat to veto any additional sanctions on Iran, as U.S. negotiators press for an agreement to end a standoff over Tehran’s nuclear program. “We lead best when we combine military power with strong diplomacy, when we leverage our power with coalition building, when we don’t let our fears blind us to the opportunities that this new century presents,” Obama said.
