The speeches of previous American presidents enjoyed a warm, often rioyous, reception. President Kennedy’s “Ich bin ein Berliner” speech and President Reagan’s “Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall” statement were especially memorable. As far as that goes, our current president’s last Berlin appearance was enthusiastically received — not so much this time. In fact, The Weekly Standard reported that while Obama drew a crowd of 200,000 in 2008, that number shrank to a mere 6,000 on Wednesday. Scandals plaguing the White House are taking their toll. Benghazi, violation of the freedom of the press, targeting by the IRS, discrimination by the EPA, the lavish and frequent vacations and entry into additional world conflicts are all dragging the Obama administration down. But the one that has Deutschlanders especially steamed is the NSA’s collection of emails, Internet searches and telephone metadata. Demonstrations directed against Obama began even before his Berlin appearance, prompting NBC reporter Chuck Todd to predict a few banners and signs might show up at his speech.
