Obligatory Elections Day Status: First, the pessimism and the inevitable resignation... Everybody knows that the dice are loaded Everybody rolls with their fingers crossed Everybody knows that the war is over Everybody knows the good guys lost Everybody knows the fight was fixed The poor stay poor, the rich get rich Thats how it goes Everybody knows Everybody knows that the boat is leaking Everybody knows that the captain lied Everybody got this broken feeling Like their father or their dog just died. (sing it, Leonard!) Then the action... I still believe in voting, because a silent majority is a bloody oxymoron. In a democracy, when the majority is silent, they are the minority and theyve abdicated their responsibility to complain about shit. The absence of action is NOT action. Also, this Charter, and what it stands for, has offended me so deeply, I *must* vote, if only to vote against it. Finally, this five-week dog and pony show just cost us $88 million, so I need to do something in order to feel that it wasnt all for nothing (even if it sometimes is). And the alternative... That being said, if you really cant bring yourself to vote for any of the options available and want to make a statement, dont refrain from voting or decide to spoil your ballot. In Quebec spoiled ballots are NOT counted, but if you leave it blank, its counted as a rejected ballot. That, at the very least, makes a conscious statement about how you feel about our political process, and doesnt just look like you were too stupid to manage a simple x in box. Happy Voting/Not Voting/Making Fun of The Futility of Voting Because (You Think) Youre Way Smarter Than Everyone Else Day!
