Darwin 23.9C to 34.4C, 29% and UV that hit 12.5 at 12:30pm Noonamah 23.3C to 37C and 22%. Middle Point 20C to 38.9C and 18%. On this day in Darwin Ap - October 21 Highest maximum temperature 37.0°C 1951 Lowest minimum temperature 20.0°C 2000 Wettest 57.0mm 1983 Whats Up in the Night Sky: The Orionid Meteor shower peaks tonight for the keen and for those in dark locations. They rank as the 2nd fastest of all and 3rd highest in Fireball count. Being fast (234,000kmhr) they can leave streaks of meteor smoke or even explode. Best time is before 6am (give yourself an hour), face north but look straight up. They will appear to come from Orion (hence the name) but can appear anywhere in the sky. Straight up is best. Auroras for Earth have started up since that X1.1 flare that wasnt even Earth directed, but was so powerful that the side swipe is enough to create some awesome shows in the northern hemisphere and a widespread HF radio blackout for Australia and Asia. There is a 45% chance of a Geomagnetic storm from this. The auroras should continue tonight that may be viewable from Tasmania (long exposure cameras may be necessary). The massive Sunspot that created this is still turning towards us and has now grown bigger from when it emitted the X-Class flare, which at the time was over 2 times the width of Earth. Chances for these big flares are even higher now as it grows AND is just days away from aiming right at us. LIVE pics of this is on my website. Auroras wont be seen here, but the X-rays emitted will cause radio black out if/when another X-class flare happens. When the X1.1 flare happened, we also got our highest UV reading in nearly 18 months. Apparently they shouldnt be linked. Hmmmmm. Forecast: Palmerston Wednesday 24-36C, winds lower than today to 15 kmhr, highest around lunchtime, slightly more humid. Slight chance of rain after midnight. BOM: Darwin City and Outer Darwin area 25-34C Mostly sunny. Slight (20%) chance of a shower (omm). Winds west to northwesterly 15 to 20 km/h tending northeast to southeasterly 15 to 25 km/h before dawn then tending north to northwesterly in the late afternoon. Rural 22-37. Next chance of big storms not till early November.
