Oct 24: Thursday started off nicely with ducks and geese quacking on the lake, a bowl of cereal and real milk (I went to the grocery last night!) and some coffee. My campground neighbor uphill from me, Mike and Bobbi, had just sold their home up in Spokane, WA and were traveling with all their possessions in their restored antique travel trailer! They are headed south for the winter, probably to Texas, and we had a nice talk about Washington State, where I had my first assignment at Fort Lewis, and about Mineral Wells and Weatherford in Texas, which were two of the towns that I’d take my kids through on the way to canoe the Brazos River. They were going to stay a day or two more so they could explore the Grand Staircase Escalante area a bit more. After I packed up, I headed for Boulder, UT, the same little town I had come through after climbing the Burr Trail out of the waterpocket fold. I had gone north to the Capitol Reef then. This time I was coming into town from the southwest. My first impression of Boulder had been a ranching town turned touristy…but they have more than that! They were the last incorporated town in the United States to receive their mail via mule train! The Utah Scenic Route 12 I was traveling was the second automobile capable road that had been forced through the rough terrain by the CCC during the pre-WW II years.
