Oct 28, 2013: One Monday in the life of Scott Cranswick, retired petrophysicist. So it’s Monday. I’m not at work in Anchorage of course. My day started at sunrise with the tradewinds ruffling the palm fronds outside my open 2nd story doors/windows. I awoke to the sound of the wind in the palms and the sunlight spilling into my windows. I get up, make coffee, relax, read/respond to emails, check the surf report – OMG! Swell has arrived! Go for it! Drive a short distance and catch some waves before breakfast. Return from the beach and eat breakfast about noon. More emails. Do a couple errands. Watch some Monday night football (starts at 2:00PM in Hawaii). Eat a snack. Then time for another surf session. Walk out my back door with sandals across the lava flows. Remove my sandals to walk barefoot through the golf course for about a quarter of a mile. Find a serene beach with breaking waves. It is about sunset and I’m the only one to paddle out to the lineup. A giant green sea turtle has hauled out onto the steep sand beach close to me - sleeping. Gingerly, I step around the awesome creature and enter into the tropical water. Paddle out through the channel riptide to the swell lineup without getting my hair wet. Bobbing up-and-down on the surfboard, seeing the lava rock and coral 6’ below in crystal-clear water, waiting for the next set of swells, looking at the setting sun above the Pacific horizon, humming Nielson’s song “going where the sun keeps shining …… … … through the pouring rain…… goin where the weather, meets my clothes….. hangin off of the northeast wind ….. sailing on summer breeze ….. skippin over the ocean like a stone ….. whaaaaa whaaaa whaa …….”. I catch a few fun rides before the sun sets. Paddle into the shore of the resort where 3 photographers are taking wedding pictures of bride/groom at the shoreline where I’m hauling my carcass out of the water (oops!). Walk barefoot in the twilight across the golf course and arrive home just before dark. Go swimming in the pool, after dark. Haul out of the pool onto a chase lounge and read a book with my headlamp to illuminate the pages during perfect nighttime tropical temperatures. Now I’m back in my condo with all the windows/doors open, wearing only swimming trunks, tradewinds flowing through, typing this Facebook update, preparing to watch Netflix. Tomorrow morning the swell should be bigger – will walk across the golf course at dawn. Aloha from Hawaii!
