"Oct. 7, 2013, Dear friends, Once again, dirty energy interests are angling to gut our democracy so they can continue their dirty ways. Tomorrow the Supreme Court will hear opening arguments for McCutcheon v. FEC, a case that could open the floodgates for nearly-unlimited campaign contributions from individuals.1 It’s time make some noise and let the Supreme Court know democracy is for the PEOPLE not big money. This case is shaping up to be the next Citizen’s United and it’s thanks to one man: Shaun McCutcheon, a top dollar political donor who also happens to be the CEO of a coal company. That’s right, a CEO in one of the dirtiest and most dangerous industries on earth wants to be able to give near-unlimited campaign contributions to his buddies in congress. McCutcheon spent a huge sum of money trying to buy the last election and now he wants to spend even more on the next. But he doesn’t want to jump through hoops, he wants to write vote-buying sized cheques directly to elected officials, and the individual cap of $123,200 per election is getting in the way. He doesn’t seem to mind that this limit is more than twice what the average American family makes. Now the Supreme Court could give him exactly what he wants. If the case is ruled in his favor, the amount an individual can give to elected officials and their campaign groups would increase to $3,633,200 -- enough for fossil fuel industry executives to keep a stranglehold on our politics. If we want to have any chance at addressing climate change, we can’t let the dirty energy money flooding our political system continue unopposed. Join us in calling for an end to dirty energy money in politics. The Supreme Court will ultimately decide how this case will be remembered. Will it be an example of our legal system at its worst, siding with the rich and powerful? Or will they uphold the values of the American people and the founding principles of democracy by rejecting McCutcheon’s arguments? Either way, it’s clear we need to be louder than ever in telling the Supreme Court, our elected leaders, and all those trying to undermine campaign finance laws: our democracy is not for sale! Thanks so much for taking a few moments to help us push back against the corporate takeover of our democracy. -Steve 1 I wrote about the case last week at the Huffington Post.
