The story begins as Jesus leaves Judea and returns to Galilee through the town of Sychar. It was at Jacob’s well that Jesus asked the Samaritan woman for a drink of water. There were three routes between Judea and Galilee, but this was the most commonly used route because it was the shortest route. But Jesus did not use this route because of the shorter distance. Jesus used this route because this Samaritan woman was destined to meet the Messiah. The heart of this story is not about this woman’s sin. It is the story of Jesus proclaiming that he is indeed the Messiah. Jesus explained that he was the living water of all who would come to worship God in spirit and truth. Verse of the Day John 4:11-14 11 Sir, the woman said, you have nothing to draw with and the well is deep. Where can you get this living water? 12 Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did also his sons and his flocks and herds? 13 Jesus answered, Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, 14 but whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.
