October 18 - #IfAGWerePresident...I would ok the Keystone XL oil pipeline. Ordinarily, the President has little business in the oil business but this one will have to cross our border with Canada. The entire pipeline is about 1200 miles from Alberta (which Im guessing is somewhere in Canada) to some mining joint in Nebraska. The line on the American side is less than 900 miles. In order for the Canadian company to build the pipeline, the President has to decide whether or not it is in the best interest of the country. I say it is but I really dont think it is that big of a deal. The Canadians, our closest friend and a great ally, have oil (albeit in filthy sands), a product we consume heavily. They need to get it from their mines to our refineries down in Planet Houston so they can sell it to us for a reasonable price. The oil is supposedly in a gunky sandy clay mess of ground so it takes far more energy to refine it into our preferred brand of fuel. Building the pipeline will provide some jobs but they are temporary. It only takes like a hundred people to run the whole thing after it is built. If we continue to stall on this thing, our Canadian friends will build their own pipeline to the Pacific where they will fill ocean tankers and send their product to the Chinese. I simply dont see why we wouldnt do this. It requires actually very little of us and it provides us with access to crude from a country that doesnt want us to burn to the ground.
