October 27 Today is Sunday, October 27, 2013. This is the 300th day of the year, with 65 days remaining in 2013. Fact of the Day: radio station Marconi, Fessenden, and De Forest were the catalysts. However, it was an engineer for Westinghouse Electric who, in 1916, was broadcasting music from his garage (in Wilkinsburg, PA, a suburb of Pittsburgh) over a wireless (amateur radio station 8XK) who really got the whole thing started. A newspaper article about the broadcasts caused such interest that the head honchos at Westinghouse decided to build a real radio station. It took until this day in 1920 for the Westinghouse radio station to receive a license to broadcast. The license for KDKA, Pittsburgh came from the U.S. Department of Commerce. Although the license was officially issued on this day, KDKA did not start their broadcast operations for a week (they had to wait until the license was posted in the station). On November 2, 1920, the station aired the returns of the Harding/Cox election ... the first radio programming to reach an audience of any size ... approximately 1,000 people. And so we salute this day as the official birthday of mass-appeal radio. Events 1659 - Two Quakers who came from England in 1656 to escape religious persecution, were executed in the Massachusetts Bay Colony for their religious beliefs. 1787 - The first of the Federalist Papers, a series of essays calling for ratification of the Constitution of the United States of America, was published in the New York Independent Journal. 1904 - The first rapid transit subway, the IRT, opened in New York City. Today, the New York subway system is the largest in the world. 1936 - Mrs. Wallis Simpson was granted a divorce from her husband, leaving her free to marry Britains King Edward VIII. 1938 - DuPont announced its new synthetic yarn, called nylon. 1962 - In the Cuban Missile Crisis, Soviet Union Premier Nikita Khrushchev offered to remove Soviet missile bases in Cuba if the United States removed its missile bases in Turkey. 2004 - The Boston Red Sox won their first World Series since 1918, beating the St. Louis Cardinals 3-0 in Game 4.
