October 4th. Todays reading is Matthew chapters 10 and 11. Topics covered in chapter 10 include: Christ sends His apostles to do miracles; To preach; He tells them of persecutions; Blessings to those who receive Him. In chapter 11: John sends his disciples to Christ; The testimony of Christ concerning John. Amen. Chapter 10 begins with the calling of Christs twelve apostles. He had already called them as disciples and we read in previous chapters of many disciples of all types. In these twelve He will fulfill His promise to make them fishers of men. As a side note, I recommend the book Twelve Ordinary Men by John MacArthur. He does a very thorough biography of the twelve apostles and it is scripturally sound. Christ then give the apostles their commission, sending them first to the Jews not the Gentiles. It is later that they are told to go into the whole world. He tells them of the sufferings they would endure and assures them that they will have help when they need to find the words; the Spirit would speak in them. Got gives us our ability to speak to the purpose of His kingdom when we need it. He also set terms for His coming. There would be divisions because all must prefer Christ to even the closest family member. We go on to see John the Baptist sending his own disciples to learn about Christ. Perhaps it was for his own satisfaction. We have to know that even the best are not always strong and where there is true faith there is still and element of unbelief. Or perhaps he was asking for his disciples sakes. They watched him become imprisoned and presumably were weaker in knowledge and faith and needed their own confirmation. At any rate we see that Christ knew how to value people according to their worth in His appraisal of John the Baptist. Greatness is not measured by appearances or outward splendor. He asks that all take notice that the Messiahs kingdom is at hand. After reproving those who took His ministry in vain, He lovingly asks us all to take on His yoke; to submit to Him and serve and obey Him. A yoke speaks of hardship, but if an animal must pull, the yoke helps it. Rest for the soul is the best rest. The way of this rest is to sit at Christs feet and hear His word. Have a blessed day.
