October: Season of the Witch….part 1 October marks the years end for those who follow the Old Ways. We look forward to age-old celebrations and traditions as the Wheel of the Year gets ready to turn. The energy definitely shifts on the first. The days become drier and the evenings are clear with a hint of cool. Even here in Southern Florida the atmosphere fells different. I made my yearly trip to the Craft store to select this year’s addition to the Halloween decorations I already have. Although Yule is my personal favorite Sabbat, Samhain marks the beginning of the New Year and its possibilities. I try to keep the atmosphere more magickal, than scary-and I was a bit surprised to find ‘Day of the Dead’ decorations at Micheals. For those who are not familiar with the Day of the Dead, here is a brief history. Many spiritual groups perform some type of memorial on Halloween, October 31st and All Saints Day, November 1st. Pagans set an extra place at dinner to ‘invite’ those who have passed on. They participate in conversation that remembers their loved ones and keeps the memory alive. If you are in New Orleans and many islands you may see family members cleaning the area around headstones and graves, and later picnicking at the site in honor of those passed. They also dress in fancy finery for the occasion. Day of the Dead statuary is made from plaster or paper mache’. Hey are essentially skeletons in over the top costumes. They all seem different from each other. I am the proud Mama of about 20 of them. And yes, my Ex-husband was as happy to see them go, as he was me. Last night the light from the Moon was so strong, I got up to look at it. I knew we are still a week away from the 3rd Quarter bit the brightness was unusual for a Waxing moon. The actual Full Moon is on October 8. It is called a Blood Moon, and comes along with a Total Lunar Eclipse. During a total lunar eclipse the Earth moves between the Sun and Moon, casting the shadow, or the eclipse. The moon will be visible from most points of the United States with varying clarity-but it will be bright with a red cast, so check it out! The Full Moon will be under the astrological influence of Aries. The energy is aggressive and strong. It will allow you to speak freely and gather warrior like energy. This is a good time to release constraints and allow you to move free of restrictive circumstances. Light a red candle on the night of the Full Moon and meditate on what you need to release in order to move forward!
