October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month. This month celebrates the many and varied contributions of Americas workers with disabilities. During the Holocaust, people with disabilities were viewed as lives unworthy of living. Under the Nazi regime, people with disabilities living in institutions were targeted for systematic killing. This was one component of a biomedical vision which imagined a racially and genetically pure and productive society, and embraced unthinkable strategies to eliminate those who did not fit within that vision. This month, we honor those who were murdered because their lives were viewed as unfit, and celebrate the contributions of people with disabilities to the work of the Museum and the world.
