Odd, that when a rape occurs in India it is mainstream news, making innocent people think India is some kind of rape-capital of the world According to statistics released by UN, the reported rape incidents in Western countries is far higher. Take USAs 27 (twenty-seven) women per 10,000 vs Indias 1.8 (thats one point eight, not eighteen), almost 15 times higher. Yet, no one talks about it. Look at South Africa (another developed country, 134 incidents per 10,000 (nearly 75 times higher than India). Now some people may argue what about rapes that are undeclared? Simple, those cannot be accounted for, and there is no reliable intuition regarding which country has the propensity to declare more of them, any more than our intuition failed to inform us that most of the so-called developed world has higher incidents. Furthermore, and by definition, if only reported stats can be accounted for, why is Indian media over-accounting for it compared to the rest of the world? Living in US since nearly 10 years now, I have come across at most one piece of news regarding the subject. The point is, it is important to raise awareness, but not at the cost of skewing ratios.
