Oedema / Lymphedema is the swelling in one or more extremities that results from impaired flow of the lymphatic system. This is especially common amongst the elderly and during pregnancy due to immobility and obstruction of drainage. Our lymphatic system is a series of vessels that run throughout the entire body. The vessels pass through lymph nodes which are within most tissues, these vary in size between a green pea and a large almond, there are clusters of lymph nodes which are in your neck, chest, armpit, abdomen and groin. This system collects waste fluid from our cells, cleans it of waste products, dead cells and unwanted microorganisms then returns it to the blood stream. The lymph flows when we work our muscles, the pressure circulates the liquid through one way valves towards the nodes. Deep breathing also stimulates movement and so exercise is a great way to keep the bodys immune system running well. To keep swelling down health providers may recommend keeping your legs raised when sitting, wearing support stockings, limiting how much salt you eat, or taking a medicine called a diuretic. It is also advisable to lose weight (if you are overweight), avoid standing for long periods of time and to take regular exercise such as swimming or walking. Listen to the clip below on how to care for your lymphatic system.
