Oedema / swelling is common after surgery as part of the body’s natural inflammatory response. You may know someone (eg following knee replacements, lumpectomy, abdominal or hand surgery) who have been experiencing long-term issues with oedema, either due to scar tissue or impaired lymphatic drainage. Cairns Occupational Therapy’s therapists can assist with managing oedema using: - Low level laser therapy to target pitting / fibrotic oedema - Manual lymphatic drainage massage - Treatment to soften the scar tissue including massage, use of silicone sheeting or ultrasound - Dynamic Tape designed to drain lymphatic fluid away from the surgical site - Bandaging or compression garments to assist with oedema management, when required - Education on skin care and central lymphatic clearance exercises - Development of task modification and energy conservation techniques to manage pain and swelling postoperatively Early management is best and can reduce discomfort and improve function. The week after surgery is ideal, but it is never too late.
