Of all the vestigial cultural habits we somehow retain in this brave new world, grocery cashiers automatically double-bagging the chicken (or the ground beef, or the pork; whatever) is one of the weirdest. The chicken is already shrink-wrapped in plastic and Styrofoam, two of those tissue-like plastic bags offer no more protection than one... ...And always by themselves, so as not to contaminate the potato chips or the jar of pickles. Its as if, on the subject of meat, we all still live in turn-of-the-20th-century Brooklyn.
