Of the 38 years I spent teaching high school English, 29 were in all-girls schools. I also spent 25 years teaching AP Composition & Literature - which is why I found this article so interesting. Its a brilliant concept for an AP class, interdisciplinary while at the same time affording excellent coverage of required material in both fields. I can say in all honesty that I wish I had thought of it. Now, my teaching of young women involved 11 years at a non-religious prep school, 3 years at a Modern Orthodox Jewish day school (which I loved but was just too far to drive to) and 15 years at a Catholic school whose self-identity drifted from classic prep to narrow parochialism. Of the eight outstanding southern California high schools mentioned in the article as belonging to this online consortium, seven are girls schools, and two of the three at which I worked are part of the group. The third is not - no surprise, given the limited abilities and lack of vision of the people in charge, trustees and admins alike. What is really sad is that the students at that school will not have the opportunity to participate in this innovative and well-thought-out program. Innovation and thought are not words that spring to mind when one considers who is running the place, and it goes without saying that they should be.
