Off to the right, do you see it? But what do you not see? Could it be that you see the infamous bluish-black line, but...without any trail close enough to claim that its just a shadow. Neutron beam spectrometry measuring and generating CCN aerosols. Seeding of Cirrus Clouds to Reduce Global Warming Abstract: This kind of seeding operation would require seeding an air mass prior to cirrus formation, allowing an optimal background concentration of ice nuclei to become established. This practice would initially produce more cirrus clouds in regions of clear sky supersaturated with respect to ice. most ice crystals appear to result from homogeneous freezing nucleation, but seeding cold cirrus with AgI or BiI3 would replace homogeneous nucleation with heterogeneous nucleation processes, resulting in fewer but larger ice crystals *Note that the cooling needed to neutralize a doubling of CO2 is about 3.7 W m-2. https://ams.confex/.../webprogram/Paper224083.html -- We can generate carbonaceous particles via combustion, atomization, homogeneous nucleation of single component particles, homogeneous nucleation of multi-component particles, and heterogenous condensation onto atomized seed particles. Our laboratory setup is centered around the capability of generating multiple types of carbonaceous aerosol particles and simulating particle formation and atmospheric processing of secondary organic aerosol (SOA) using an oxidation flow tube reactor. We have the capability of operating a variety of aerosol instruments, including state-of-the-art aerosol mass spectrometers, and we collaborate extensively with external research groups to obtain additional measurements of aerosol properties. We collaborate extensively with research scientists in the Center for Aerosol and Cloud Chemistry at Aerodyne Research, Inc., located in Billerica, MA. A simplified schematic of our experimental setup for generation, processing, and characterization of carbonaceous aerosol particles is shown below. The Potential Aerosol Mass (PAM) reactor is a highly oxidizing environment that simulates atmospheric oxidation processes on timescales ranging from a day to several days in a few minutes in the laboratory. The reactor was designed by Prof. William Brunes group at Penn State. In addition to being used as a source of secondary organic aerosol (SOA) particles, the PAM reactor is also used to simulate atmospheric processing of soot and other model primary organic aerosols. UV lamps (λ = 254 nm) are located inside the reactor to initiate photochemistry to produce OH radicals, which are the dominant oxidizing agent in the atmosphere. https://www2.bc.edu/~davidovi/lab%20tour.html -- Neutron beam spectrometry: https://google/search?q=Neutron+beam+spectrometry&oq=Neutron+beam+spectrometry&aqs=chrome..69i57.1051j0j7&sourceid=chrome&es_sm=93&ie=UTF-8 Phys.
