Offenders caught in the eye of the storm Thirty people have been charged by police following a two-day crackdown on crime. The results come following Operation Storm - Greater Manchester Police’s latest blitz on burglary and robbery. Last week officers carried out warrants across the Force as part of the initiative. It was held between 1 and 2 October and saw police arrest 128 people. During the operation officers recovered school equipment and tablets that had been stolen from a school. The items were stolen following a series of burglaries in September. They were returned during an intelligence-led operation by officers. Operation Storm saw officers’ target wanted offenders and those criminals that have been making victims of returning students and freshers. Offenders were arrested for offences including burglary, theft, robbery, and domestic abuse. GMP Deputy Chief Constable Ian Hopkins, said: “We want the results of this operation to show people across Greater Manchester that those harming our communities will be brought to justice and we will be relentless in tackling their offending. “The success of our officers in recovering the stolen items is fantastic news and means that pupils at the school won’t be left without the educational tools they need.” The operation gave specialist and divisional officers the opportunity to visit criminals at their homes to ensure they were fulfilling their bail and curfew conditions. DCC Hopkins added: “Criminals prefer this time of year, as the dark nights mean they can carry out their offending without being noticed. We want our residents, which includes our growing student community to help stop them in their tracks by taking a few simple steps that will help make a difference. “Use a light timer when leaving your home for the night, set an alarm if you’re going out and try to make your house look occupied. By following these three steps you can reduce the chance of becoming a victim of crime.” To report suspicious activity you can call police on 101 or anonymously through Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. Crimestoppers is an independent charity that will not want your name, just your information. Your call will not be traced or recorded and you do not have to go to court or give a statement.
