Officials with the Department of Public Safety Homeland Security and Emergency Management are working with local officials to open shelters in several Minnesota cities. Gov. Mark Dayton has authorized the use of National Guard armories in both Albert Lea and Olivia, Minn. As of 4:10am, there were 52 stranded travelers sheltering at the Olivia Armory. The State Patrol has informed the National Guard unit that roads near Olivia will soon be opened. 69 stranded travelers stayed overnight at the Albert Lea Armory. No update on road conditions. The Salvation Army is on site preparing food for those staying at the armory. Conditions include deep snow drifts, high winds and blowing snow creating whiteout conditions, all while under sub Zero temperatures. Several highways have been closed in areas due to snow drifting up to 5-6 feet deep.
