Often we take God for granted when things are going well in our lives, and only seek God’s presence in a time of catastrophe or when we seek a blessing. This attitude indicates that our relationship with God is not based on love or reverence for God but one that is utilitarian in nature. We want God when it is convenient for us. In this way we distort and pervert the proper order or nature of the relationship between ourselves and God. Instead of being in the role of a servant before God, in essence we want God to serve our purposes. For many folks, therefore, their faith is self-serving and ultimately narcissistic in nature. This type of relationship is not based on genuine love or respect, but only on selfish ambition. --K. J. Mellish, 1 & 2 Samuel: New Beacon Bible Commentary
