On this day in 1914 my grandfather Harry Samson marched off to war. He was a professional soldier. Wounded by shrapnel in 1915, gassed in 1916, shot in the leg in 1917 on each occasion he was returned to the front. He was eventually killed on 26th October 1918 during one of the last battles of the war. I will be switching off the lights and burning a candle at 10pm tonight. A brave man who I never knew, just as his son (my dad) never got to know him either.
