Ogun launches ‘Igba Otun’ Metro taxis *Tasks FG on poor state of Federal roads Governor Ibikunle Amosun of Ogun State on Monday injected 150 new metro cars into the state transport sector explaining that the move was to enhance smooth transportation in the state. He also tasked the Federal Government to raise its game in the maintenance of its vast network of road within the state complaining that the poor state of Federal roads in the state is as big minus to smooth transportation in the state. The governor while launching the vehicles noted, “Apart from the fact that these new vehicles will enhance smooth transportation, we are also making a statement and setting standards for vehicles that will now ply our roads. It is only Ogun Standard vehicles on Ogun Standard roads that will make Ogun Standard transportation system a reality.” He noted that the event was the second time the government would be injecting vehicles into that sector in the state, noting that a similar 50 buses were introduced into the sector in September last year. According to the governor, “While the buses have been able to take care of our inter-city transportation, we also feel the need to enhance intra-city transportation. Today’s event therefore, marks another milestone in the history of our State as we are delivering on our promise by launching the first phase of the Taxi Scheme with one hundred and fifty (150) brand new fully air-conditioned Nissan Sunny/Almera brand of vehicles known as “Igba Otun” meaning, New Dawn. It is a new dawn in the overall development of our State. “Let me assure you all that in addition to construction of roads and provision of vehicles, in furtherance of our determination to make travelling more comfortable, safe and worthwhile for the good people of our dear State, the Bureau of Transportation has done a lot in its complimentary roles for efficient transportation system. In this regard, the Bureau has designed traffic signs on major roads to ensure safe motoring. It has also installed traffic lights at some major junctions in the state capital. The Bureau has also carried out lane marking on roads to ensure lane discipline, free flow of traffic and safety of pedestrians. These facilities and services will however be replicated in other major towns when the on-going road construction projects are completed,” Senator Amosun noted. The governor pledged his administration’ s commitment to the development of Ogun State, and the well-being of our people stressing, “As we have continued to renovate existing roads, we are also constructing new ones. Apart from the Ibara-Sokori-To toro road that flagged-off our Ogun Standard roads, there are many other roads that our Administration has completely reconstructed.” He noted that already “ other major roads and over-head bridges in the three Senatorial Districts are at various levels of completion” pointing out that “these are roads which will re- define the landscape of our State and bear eloquent testimony to the determination of our administration to pursue our Urban Renewal and Rural/ Infrastructure Development Programme with zeal.” Monday’s inauguration of 150 cars was the second time the state government would be injecting vehicles into the transport sector of the state. The first was on the 23rd September, 2012 when it launched the Ogun State Bus Mass Transit Scheme during which fifty small capacity mini-buses and seven (7) high capacity buses were unveiled.
