Oh late September, you make my heart ache with your loveliness. The weather is pleasantly warm, no longer hot and far from being cold. Unlike most of the country, which is starting to shut down for winter freezing, September, October, and at least the first half of November are prime growth seasons here in the lower and middle elevations of the desert southwest, assuming of course that the summer monsoon (which is drawing to a close) has been benevolent with rainfall. This year it was, and I have received 5.55 inches (14 cm) of precipitation since early August. The spacing was good with some rain every 2 weeks or so, and the desert has responded accordingly. My cacti are growing, spring wildflower seedlings are germinating, and summer annuals are in full force. Its a wonderful time to be alive.
