Oh this is good. The evoloution of visual fx over the last 136 years in 3 minutes, and there is as you’d expect, some very important movies highlighted in it……… plus a certain television show called Babylon 5. Could be wrong, but it might even be the ONLY television series listed amongst an impressive collection of some of the greatest, and most important, movies made to date. So it’s nice to see that Thornton and Bryant along with the guys at Foundation Imaging such as Mark Kochinski, Adam Lebowitz, Tim Wilcox and John Teska are getting a bit of deserved recognition as to their genuine importance in the evolution of special FX. Though if it wasn’t for the largely unsung technical geniuses behind the ongoing software and hardware developments there would be no digital FX. On the flip side though. About 10 minutes ago I read a B5 fan say that, “Honestly you could re-cut Bab5 without the CGI and still have a solid show right there.”. That it had “goofy spaceships” it was a “relatively small part of the show” and “Besides... the story so utterly transcends the special effects”……… WTF! The intellectual snobbery that still exists within even televised sci-fi just astounds me. You get bad FX just like you get bad scripts – don’t condemn the entire art form for that. In the visual medium, as most of us appreciate, there would be no story without the visual narrative, and a critical part of that is the visual FX……. and that’s before you get into how important CGI was for getting Babylon 5 made in the first place, keeping it on air, and the ideas it brought to it. ;) Yeah, special FX are just for those that like big explosion.....LMFAO!
