Oil & Gas vs. Renewables The biggest, and best, secret is that solar and wind are winning the race for new electricity generation in the U.S. The Federal Energy Regulatory Commissions new numbers are out. New electricity generation capacity was down 58% this June compared to June of last year. The Headlines: New coal generation was down 100% Youll see about as much new coal in the U.S. as youll see the fairytale clean coal anywhere in the world. Nuclear Energy stayed consistent at zero. Despite nearly every source of electricity seeing a decline, nuclear stayed even. Last year no new nuclear generation came on line, which the industry matched with gusto again this year. Solar and wind combined outpaced coal, natural gas, and nuclear combined. In fact, the technologies that saw the lowest decline and declined far less than the average in the energy sector were geothermal, solar, and wind, in that order. Skeptics will say... Skeptics will say that there is still more gas, nuclear, and coal electricity produced in the U.S. than solar and wind produces. Of course! They were here yesterday, and 50-100+ years ago.
